The Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) opened its inaugural Partnerships for Water Security Conference today, with the Vice Chairperson, Governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka, addressing the urgent need for sustainable water management across counties.

Speaking to delegates, Lusaka emphasized the blocโ€™s mission to create a water-secure environment that supports the 17 million residents in the region.

Highlighting the challenges, Lusaka noted that only 53% of the population has access to water services, with rural areas significantly underserved.

He urged increased collaboration between counties to address shared water resources and advocated for innovative financing solutions, including county bonds and public-private partnerships, to boost investment in water infrastructure.

In his opening remarks, Lusaka acknowledged USAIDโ€™s support and called upon stakeholders to leverage existing research networks to develop sustainable solutions.

He reaffirmed LREBโ€™s commitment to water security as essential for environmental stewardship and regional prosperity.

The conference runs through November 7 and brings together governors, water sector partners, and local leaders to strategize on water conservation and improved service delivery within the bloc.
