Opet FC and Malaba Giants registered victories in the Football Kenya Federation Western Region League- Zone B matches to keep alive their hopes of clinching the title.
Opet earned a 2-0 victory against Busia Ajax and at Okame Primary School play ground while Malaba Giants trounced Naitiri 3-1 in Naitiri.
The win saw Opet FC consolidate their lead at the top of the table with 19 points from eight matches. They have won six matches, drawn one and lost one.
With the match headed for a goalless draw at half time, Opet intensified attacks that earned them a penalty in the 40th minute after an Ajax defender handled in the box. Salim Adamus made no mistake from the resultant kick.
In a bid to come back into the game, Ajax made their first substitution in the 44th minute with Dennis Wandera replaced by Moses Sumba while Edwin Okarikodi came in place of Manasseh Okware.
Philip Wangoma buried Ajax hopes with his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute to see his team scoop three crucial points.
Opet FC CEO, Fidelis Opeto attributed their victory to discipline, practice and the moral support he has accorded the players during training and while honouring matches both at home and away.
” I need to beef up the midfield and striking force with quality players. These two departments are critical in determining the outcome of a match,” he said.
Opet captain, Brian Omeri was happy with the victory noting that it was attributed to regular practice and confidence.
Ajax captain Edwin Okarikodi said they played their best but were unlucky to concede all three points, adding that the cheering squad of their opponents tensed his players.
Malaba Giants scored two quick goals through Jonathan Waiswa and Kelvin.Otieno in the 17th and 20th minutes respectively before Jairus Sarah pulled one back, for 13th placed Naitiri, in the 29th minute to make it 2-1 at halftime.
Kennedy Karakacha put the issue beyond doubt with the third goal in the 68th minute. The win saw Giants maintain second position with 17 points from eight matches in the 14-team Zone B League.
In another match played at Matili Secondary School, Matili City drew 1-1 with Nakoba. Joshua Wangusi scored for Matili City with Calvin Chapurukha levelling for Nakoba in the match that saw Nakoba coach, Laisa Musa sent off.
Bungoma Sirens dealt a big blow to hosts and
bottom place Kiyoro FC with a 2-0 victory. Stanley Yewa (41st minute) and Bramuel Kibanani (73rd) accounting for the goals.
At Nalondo Stadium, Sirare FC and Posta drew 1-1. Benson Juma scored for Sirare with Abdi Sharif replying for Posta.
