Manchester City produced a sparkling performance as they edges Real Madrid 4.1 at Etihad in an entertaining champions league semi final first leg tie on Tuesday night.

City only needed two minutes to open the scoring after Kevin Debruyne headed in a diving header from a Riyadh Mahrez cross.

It was the first time in 59 appearances that De Bruyne has scored and assisted in the same champions league game after he did it against Real Madrid in 2020.

City looked much composed than the visitors.

Real Madrid succumbed to a wave of attacks from the fierce Manchester City attack and it didn’t take long before City went up 2.0.

Gabriel Jesus excellently waded in the second from close range in the 11th minute.

It was a moment of jubiliation for the Manchester City fans who are bracing themselves for their first ever champions league title, having lost to Chelsea in the last season’s final.

Riyadh Mahrez and Phil Foden both missed golden chances in the first half before Karim Benzema scored from a Ferland Mendy’s cross in the 33rd minute.

It was a sigh of relief for Real Madrid but their relief was short lived.

Manchester City quickly organized themselves after the break and Foden headed in a Fernandinho cross to put City 3.1 up in the 53rd minute.

Real Madrid appeared to be pressing on and their efforts paid off after Brazilian striker Vinicious Junior scored a superb second in the 55th minute.

Bernado Silva restored City’s lead with a superb finish in the 74th minute and City looked set to win 4.2.

However,Real Madrid won a 82nd minute penalty which was converted by Benzema.

Benzema’s penalty was his 41st goal for Real Madrid this season.

He becomes the first player to score 40 goals in a single season for Real Madrid since Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2017/18 season.

The result means Manchester City will be heading into the return leg at Santiago Bernabeu with a positive attitude and a slender advantage.

“It was a fantastic game for both sides ,all we can do is perform as we perform,” City’s manager Pep Guardiola told reporters after the game.

However,Real Madrid will be determined to launch a comeback and edge out the resilience City in an attempt to win their record 15th champions league title and their manager Carlo Anceloti’s 4th.

Liverpool will face Villarreal in another semi final on Wednesday night.

This season’s champions league final will be staged at Stade DE France,Paris on the 28th of May.
