Busia: Woman Rep Florence Mutual Explains How She Lost To Paul Otuoma In ODM Nominations

By Paul Mukana

Busia county woman representative Florence Mutua has spoke publicly about her loss in the recently concluded ODM primaries.

It is the first time that the lawmaker made public comments alleging that the elections were marred with malice.

“My votes were very clean since I didn’t take part in any form of rigging. But it is an open secret that there were malpractices in Bunyala, Samia, parts of Matayos and Teso North which worked against me,”she said.

The woman representative was addressing the public at Airstrip grounds , in Busia town on Sunday where she issued a series of bursaries to needy students.

Apparently, she insisted that as far as the ODM primaries were concerned, the results from 3 constituencies were altered in favour of her political nemesis (Funyula, Budalangi and Teso North).

Mutua lost the battle to former Funyula MP Paul Otuoma who doubles up as a key ally to ODM leader Raila Odinga.

After results from 160 polling stations were verified, Otuoma garnered 49,330 votes against Mutua’s 30,696.

However, Mrs.Mutua explained that she can not launch an appeal against the results because of the respect she has for ODM party and its leadership.

“I don’t want to put my party in a difficult situation.I will soldier on since those who engaged in the irregularities know themselves.Let me thank those who turned up to vote for me, August is still very far and I still have a role to play as your woman representative,I just want to concentrate on the job now,” she added.

The battle to replace governor Sospeter Ojaamong has gathered steam with Otuoma facing off with a number of candidates from various parties.

Deputy governor Moses Mulomi will be firing his shot via a DAP-K party ticket whilst Nambale MP John Bunyasi is set to vie for the gubernatorial position on an ANC party ticket under the Kenya Kwanza umbrella.

Otuoma’s victory has jeopardized Mrs.Mutua’s attempt of becoming the first woman governor of Busia county.

However, the woman representative maintained that all isn’t lost and that she will live to fight another battle.

Besides, she promised her supporters to be patient as she recalibrates herself to announce her next move in a few weeks time.

“There’s alot that has been spoken after my loss in the nominations, but it is not yet gone,I want to assure all my loyal supporters that there’s going to be light at the end of the tunnel,”she noted.

The announcement literally implies that the woman representative has accepted defeat and is busy realigning herself for another political position.

At the same time, she is so keen to ensure that her loyalty to the ODM party remains intact.

In the meantime, outgoing Busia governor, Sospeter Ojaamong has tightened his grip on the Teso South parliamentary seat and is set to battle it out with incumbent MP Geoffrey Omuse.

Political pundits have opined that a section of Mrs.Mutua’s supporters might end up supporting the gubernatorial bid of Nambale MP John Bunyasi of ANC while others could lobby for deputy governor Moses Mulomi of DAP-K party.

Thus, ODM has got to embrace massive ground work to galvanize the Busia political space towards the August 9th elections.
