Trans Nzoia: Five Candidates Declare Interest To Succeed Governor Khaemba

By Paul Mukana

As the country gradually slides into the elections mood, Trans Nzoia county is bracing for a new governor come August 9th.

The race to succeed governor Patrick Khaemba who is serving his second and last term has engulfed into a titanic tussle.

Apparently, five aspirants have thrown in the towel and are gearing up to replace the soft spoken Khaemba.

Kiminini MP Dr.Chris Wamalwa of Ford Kenya and former Rift Valley regional commissioner George Natembeya of DAP-K party are leading the park.

Others are business moguls Doricas Njenga and Moses Khaoya who are both scrambling for the ODM party ticket thus one will have to bow down .

Then there’s retired general Philemon Samoei of DP Ruto’s UDA party.

Dr.Wamalwa is serving his second term as Kiminini MP and doubles up as a Ford Kenya party hit man under DP Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.

“I have gone personally to help in terms of oversighting CDF projects. You can see everywhere people are saying I have built houses , roads, laboratories;all because of my personal intervention in terms of oversight,” Dr.Wamalwa spoke to Citizen TV on Monday evening.

On his part, Natembeya is determined to capitalize on his experience , having served as a regional commissioner for a couple of years.

He recently spoke to citizen TV and noted that he is the only suitable candidate who can take Transnzoia county to top development status.

“Be ready for change,we will be branded because we want all civil servants to account for their time in government, not just coming in the morning and you put your coat on the table and leave. If we do things that way we won’t catch up with the developed counties,” Natembeya said.

He maintained that if elected he will not throw away the projects that have been started by Khaemba’s adminstration.

He said he will embrace auditing to know the kind of projects that need completion then act accordingly.

Natembeya was recently endorsed by Azimio’s presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga thus he enjoys a cordial backing from the Azimio brigade.

Political pundits have opined that the Transnzoia gubernatorial race will be a battle between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio.

In the meantime, both Dorcas Njenga and Moses Khaoya are seeking the ODM ticket so as to contest for the county’s top seat.

Thus, it is only one of them who will be granted the chance to vie.

It is a move that has sparkled jitters and seems to complicate the political matrix of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

Since Raila has already endorsed DAP-K’S George Natembeya, the fate of the ODM aspirants hangs in the balance.

Political pundits have urgued that efforts are underway to convince them to step down and back Natembeya.

However,Mrs.Dorcas has insisted that she is determined to be on the ballot via an ODM ticket.

“As the ODM governor,I am a leader without nepotism and I will join all the tribes,I will finish corruption,” she said in a recent interview.

On the other hand, UDA’s Philemon Samoei is lining up ready to pull a trigger in the August 9th battle to replace governor Khaemba.

Transnzoia county has a total population of over 900,000 with close to 345,000 registered voters.

The county has 5 constituencies (Cherang’any, Entebess,Saboti, Kwanza and Kiminini).

It is largely an agricultural hub with both large scale and small scale wheat, maize and dairy farming.

Hence, if Transnzoia county is managed, well, the whole country will definitely benefit in terms of food security.

So, despite analysts pointing out Dr.Wamalwa and Natembeya as the two horses, it is still a battle of titans where no one can be ruled out.

It is an absolute test of time and only the voters of Trans Nzoia county will act as the ultimate deciders on August 9th.
