An ugly scene engulfed in Kabenes, Soy constituency, Uasin Gishu county on Friday afternoon.
ODM leader Raila Odinga’s chopper was attacked by rowdy youths who destroyed its windshield with stones.
Raila together with his brigade had just attended the burial of business man Jackson Kibor and were preparing to leave when jeopardy struck.
Confirming the incident, Raila accused the perpetrators and termed it immature politics.
“The threat be came in form of youth mobilized,armed and paid to cause mayhem and disorder, destroy property and even take away lives in a bid to create political zones in the county,” Raila posted on his Facebook account on Friday evening.
He added ” For today’s unfortunate events ,I hold Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago and Soy MP! Caleb Kositany responsible,” he noted.
According to eyewitnesses, the youths attacked the plane with stones, destroying the air shield with the stones.
Apparently, they also attempted to attack Raila as he made his way back to the plane but the police acted quickly to contain the menace.
Raila was in accompany of Kakamega governor Wicliffe Oparanya, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and his Embakasi colleague Babu Owino among others.
Oparanya termed the incident as primitive at urged the police to speed up the hunt for the culprits.
” I condemn in the strongest terms today’s attack on Azimio presidential candidate Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga by rowdy youths in Soy constituency, Uasin Gishu county,” Oparanya noted on his Facebook account.
Oparanya later confirmed that all the leaders were unhurt and were flown in another chopper to Oparanya’s home in Likuyani subcounty, Kakamega county.
Suna East MP who was at the scene vividly condemned the incident and called for the concerned authorities to quickly bring the perpetrators to book.
Junet took his frustrations to Twitter on Friday evening and tweeted “Today, we almost got killed in Soy constituency, Uasin Gishu county at the the burial of Mzee Jackson Kibor.Our chopper was completely destroyed and we had to look for alternative means mid air,” @#JUNET MOHAMMED CBS.
Dozens of Azimio leaders led by Raila’s elder brother Oburu Odinga and Baby Owino have blamed Raila’s political nemesis for the attack.
However, Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has distanced himself from the ordeal.
“I condemn with the strongest terms possible the act of violence directed at former prime minister Rt.Hon. Raila Odinga after the burial of Mzee Jackson Kibor.Uasin Gishu is a peaceful county.We will pursue the matter without rest until the perpetrators are all brought to book,” posted Mandago on his Facebook account.
Raila has commenced his North Rift campaign tour and is scheduled to visit West Pokot county on Saturday.
Political pundits have opined that the trip in DP Ruto’s political bastion is meant to neutralize the DP’S fame in the rift.
