The Speaker of the Uganda’s Parliament Jacob Oulanya has died in the US.
In a statement released by Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his twitter handle, he recieved information of Oulanya’s demise at 10:30AM local time.
“Countrymen and Countrywomen, It is with a lot of sadness that I announce the death of the Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker of Parliament. I got information of this sad news at 10.30am, East African time from People that have been with him and the doctor that was caring for him in the intensive care unit,” President Museveni Twitted.
The late Oulanyah, who sources revealed was diagnosed with cancer, had been hospitalized since 3rd February, 2022 where he left Uganda in a chartered Uganda Airlines flight.
The late Oulanyah took over the leadership of the 11th Parliament on 24th May, 2021 from Rebecca Kadaga who served as Speaker of the 9th and 10th parliament between 2011 and 2021.
He served as Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan parliament, from May 2011 until May 2021.
Oulanyah was a Member of Parliament for Omoro County constituency, Omoro District, Acholi sub-region, in the Uganda’s Northern Region and NRM Vice Chairman for Northern Uganda.
Three speakers including Kadaga served for two terms. Others are Edward Ssekandi between 2001- and 2011 and Narendra Patel 1963-1971.
Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Anita Annet Among (MP) will assume office until another speaker is appointed.
