A lobby group Sauti Sasa action group (SSAG) is asking Bungoma County to operationalize the Ndengelwa gender based violence center to help curb the rising number of gender based violence (GBV) cases in Bungoma.

Speaking after a one week seminar where she met youths from Bungoma, West Pokot and Kakamega Counties, Mbuki Mburu national and county coordinator of Sauti Sasa action group and Y-act at Amref health Africa said that the lead youth organizations is currently running in counties to ensure that they help end gender based violence cases in the country.

She said that their aim of initiating the organization was to ensure that youths are included in technical working groups so that youths take part in the decision making table where they are given opportunities to present the challenges that they face.

“We have tried and ensured that youths are involved during the decision making where youths provide their input,” she added.

The coordinator appealed to the county governments to allocate resources towards fighting GBV cases and equipping of the gender based violence centers.

Brian Seli a youth advocate said that gender based violence cases in Bungoma are alarming and there is need to operationalise Ndengelwa centre so that GBV survivors can find a place where they can get encouragement and given youth friendly services.

“We want the centre to be reclaimed because at the moment the women representative is using the centre as her office instead of being used for the intended purpose,” Seli stated.

In his appeal, Seli asked all stakeholders to ensure that young girls are protected and defilement cases reported to relevant authorities and stop settling them in kangaroo courts, adding that through the Sauti Sasa action group they have been able to rescue GBV survivors, distribute dignity kits to school going girls in all the nine sub- counties and offer youth friendly services to youths.

“We should protect the life of our young girls so that we can protect our future generation. If the community will neglect them then the future generation will be ruined,” he added.
