Local Investor, National And County Govt’s To Construct Sirisia Open Air Market At Sh250 million

The local investor Kasembeli Wafula Nasiuma (Wanakhatandi) who is the Deputy Director budget national treasury said that the team was to check on the site of the market so that they can do designs for the construction of an open air market.

A local investor, National and County government is set to pump in Sh250 million to construct Sirisia open air market in Bungoma County.

The market that had been constructed earlier on through Kenya economic stimulus program collapsed in 2016 due to poor workmanship. 

Speaking during a site visit on Tuesday, an investor team from Nairobi led by Billy Owino said that the construction will start as soon as the land acreage has been established.

“We have seen the land has been encroached into after some people grabbed it but using the local administration we hope that the issue will be solved as soon as possible,” he said.

“The Director of Urban Development in the State Department for Housing and Urban Development to assist in constructing the market,” said Nasiuma.

The construction of a modern open air market will help business people have a shelter as they carry on with their businesses.

Bungoma County Public Administration CEC Richard Sabwami stated that the Public, Private Partnership will see the project implemented to cushion business people from adverse weather.

“This project has the full blessings and backing of our governor Wycliffe Wangamati, he supports the construction of this open air market,” said Sabwami.

He stated that the department of trade and public works have agreed to construct an open air market in Sirisia market. 

He said that Kenya economic stimulus program constructed the market in 2016 but it collapsed before launching owing to poor workmanship and a strong storm.

Sirisia Mp John Waluke’s Personal Assistant Christopher Wakhisi stated that the Mp supports the construction and will be available to offer help where needed.

“The Mp has lauded Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati for helping in the construction of this open air market so that our local traders can have shelter from adverse weather,”. Said Wakhisi

He revealed that the best working relationship between the governor and the Mp has made the project a success.

“Let the project implementor employ local people during it’s construction so that they can get economically empowered, let the technical team handle crucial areas but the locals be employed on other areas,” he said.

Henry Katana Deputy County Commissioner Bungoma West lauded the local investor, National government and county government for partnering to construct the open air market in Sirisia.

“This is a good project that will be beneficial to the community especially small scale business people,” he said.

Katana ordered to remove all the kiosks on the Kenha road as they wait for the market completion.

“Drug dealers are using the kiosks to sell drugs to students especially at Township schools,” he said.

He noted that the Intergovernmental working relationships will see to it that the open air market is a reality.

Simon Wechabe the chairman of Sirisia market business community lauded the investors for planning to put up the open air market.

“Poor workmanship led to the collapse of the previous market, let them build it well to the standard for the benefit of the business community,” said Wechabe.
