The Governor of Meru County Kiraitu Murungi accompanied by Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu and Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries CEC member Carole Kagwiria Mutiga, issued cheques to groups of farmers from across the County, valued at Sh146.6 million.
The funding is part of the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Project (NARIGP) through which so far, Governor Kiraitu has directly released over Sh460 million to farmers across Meru who are engaged in development of various crop value chains and agricultural enterprises.
The Governor also flagged off a 100 horsepower 4wd tractor which will operate various accompanying implements aimed at mechanizing potato farming including a chisel plough, disk plough, harrow, potato planter, boom sprayer and a potato harvester.
He also gave out desktop computers and desks meant for records management and bookkeeping.
The tractor together with the implements will fasten the process of modernizing and expanding potato production for smallholder farmers in the potato growing areas of the County.
The Governor also reiterated his administration will continue empowering farmers through training at the new Kaguru ATC center and also look into establishment of more training facilities.
He noted that the monies will go a long way in achieving the vision of improving agriculture in the County to increase food and household incomes for the people of Meru as he promised in the vision of Making Meru Great.
