Busia Assembly Tables Report On Changing Of Water Company Name From BUWASSCO To BUWASCO

Story/Reuben Olita
Busia County Assembly on Thursday tabled a report on ratification and approval of the new name for Busia County Government Water Utility Company.

The new water utility company proposed to be ratified and approved by the County Assembly is registered as Busia Water and Sewerage Company (BUWASCO) Limited, replacing the previous name Busia Water and Sewerage Services Company (BUWASSCO) Limited.
The report was tabled by a member of the Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources committee Hon John Oganga and seconded by nominated Member of the County Assembly Christine Florence Owuor.

Speaker Bernard Wamalwa said the House Business Committee will allocate time next week when the report will be debated on the floor of the House.
The County Executive Committee Member for Water, Irrigation, Environment and Natural Resources Dr Isaac Alukwe wrote to the Clerk of the County Assembly Allan Mabuka requesting for the ratification of and approval of the new name for the water utility company.
The CECM contended that  the BUWASSCO  established  by the 2015 Act was not established  in accordance with  the regulations made by the Water Services Regulatory  Board (WASREB) which is the body that issues the operating license  on satisfaction of key  performance indicators  by the  water services  provider.
BUWASSCO Ltd was partly owned by the County Government of Busia at 70 per cent shareholding and partly owned by individuals at 30pc which is against the WASREB regulations. The County Government has 100pc shareholding in the new company.
