Mmust management blasted over late condolence message on Prof Otieno’s death
By CSP Team
The Management of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust) has come under attack and Kenyans at large for applying double standards in handling news about the death of the institution’s ex-Vice Chancellor the late Prof Fredrick Otieno.
They wondered why the university took a week to announce his death to its staff and the country, yet when Prof Wangila Barasa, the founding VC succumbed to cancer in August this year, the announcement was made the same day.
Prof Otieno died on December 16, this year at Tophill hospital Eldoret. He suffered a stroke. His first term as a VC ended on November 30, last year but the University Council did not renew his second term over allegations he was under probe from the Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
This is after the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Asenath Sigot, in a letter dated December 20.
“It is with shock and sorrow that the university has learnt the passing on of Prof Fredrick Alfred Otieno. Prof Otieno was the second Vice Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. I personally knew Prof Otieno in the 1980’s when we met at Kenyatta University College,” read part of the condolence letter.
The letter further read: “I was also in the panel that interviewed Prof Otieno for the post of Vice Chancellor at Mmust. At the time, he joined Mmust in November 30,2013. I was the Acting Vice Chancellor and handed over the University to him,”.
However, those who knew Prof Otieno went on social media to register their displeasure in the manner in which the University Management handled the news about his death.
“How long does it take to compose a condolence note. That was out of order please acting VC or whoever is in charge,” posted Ameen Uthamanu Mercies on Mmust Facebook page.
“So you have learnt of his demise today! He is the best Mmust had, he did a remarkable job and left you enjoying the good he had done. RIP Prof. Salute senior. Stay with the angels,” posted Derick Sagini.
Gaytano Ouma posted: “What is this for now a time when the family members have arranged everything. The information is hypocrisy, mediocrity and of no value in the public domain. Prof FAO rest in peace,”.
“REST IN PEACE PROF FAO.Is this the time to issue a statement? Senior management frustrated his noble efforts and despite his above the bar performance, you denied him a second chance to steer Mmust to the next level and instead brought in incompetent, corrupt, anarchist acting VC’s and DVC’s, Half Hearted condolences. Thou hypocrites. God shall pay you on due time!” posted Steve Mwendwa.
